News has been released that Shigeru Miyamoto, the amazing man behind Mario, Zelda and Donkey Kong is going to be stepping down from his position of Senior Managing Director and General Manager of Nintendo’s Entertainment Analysis and Development Division.

That doesn’t mean he’s gone for good though! No, he’s merely stepping down and allowing the younger developers of Nintendo that he has spent years training to carry on with the larger projects so that he can concentrate on smaller scale games.

Wired.com had an interview with Mr Miyamoto where he stated:

“What I really want to do is be in the forefront of game development once again myself, probably working on a smaller project with even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself. Something really small.”

Looks like he’s trying to get back to his roots, and good on him I say! Which young game developer wouldn’t kill to be able to work on a small-scale project with Shigeru Miyamoto!

He’s hoping to start on a new project in 2012 and to show the game publicly within the year. So everyone keep a lookout for the awesome that is surely to come!

I am surprised that he would do this. When people get into positions of power they often do everything they can to keep those positions. I think it is very humble of Miyamoto to step back, and allow the new generation to move in. It takes a self aware man to recognize that his time is running out, as they say “Out with the old, in with the new”
